There are approximately 17,000 red squirrels left in England and they are under serious threat of extinction
620 Square Mile Stronghold
Our charity employs 8 rangers who protect a 620 square mile area in Cumbria and it is one of Englands last red squirrel strongholds.
Threat of Extinction
The American grey squirrels have and are growing so fast in numbers and entering red squirrel zones more than ever before.
What is the Problem With Greys?
The main issue with grey squirrels is that they carry a virus which is lethal to red squirrels, so they can not mix.
What is the Solution?
We must protect red squirrel areas now whilst work on long term strategies, such as a vaccine, are developed.
How you can help
The first thing that residents and visitors within our stronghold area can do to help is to be vigilant when outside and report any sightings of grey squirrels to us. Secondly, we have eight rangers employed and this comes at a cost, so any donations are highly appreciated. We need more volunteers and everybody has skills that we can use so please get in touch. We are launching corporate memberships for businesses within our area, a membership for hospitality businesses that offer accommodation and a membership for all other businesses. We really need to work together to save our reds!

Hospitality
All we ask from our hospitality members is that a Save Our Reds postcard can be left on beds after changeover for new guests to find. For retail members this would be at the till area for customers.

Annual Corporate Donation
As a business, annual charity donations can be tax efficient and we would really appreciate more local business support for our reds.

Sponsorship
There are various sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, from sponsoring feeders to sponsoring rangers and advertising banners. Please contact us for more information
Report sightings of greys
Grey squirrels carry squirrel pox and it is important that they do not mix with red squirrels. It is important to report sightings of grey squirrels in our protected area so that we can keep our reds safe
